Implants
What is Dental Implant?
Dental implants are a huge asset in tooth replacement technology giving both a natural looking and fully functional replacement tooth. The technology is now so good that implant restorations are practically indistinguishable from natural teeth.
The implant, which serves as the artificial root for your new tooth, is usually made of titanium which is compatible with human tissues. It is inserted into your jaw after which the bone is allowed to grow and bond with the implant creating a strong anchor. An artificial, realistic, natural looking tooth called a crown is then placed on top of the implant to complete the restoration process, providing a strong, natural looking tooth.
Why Should Missing Teeth Be Replaced?
There are several possible consequences from losing teeth and not replacing them:
- Drifting of adjacent teeth: when there is a missing gap, opposing teeth may over-erupt adjacent teeth and drift into the empty spaces, resulting in food trapping and possible decay
- Difficulty chewing: missing teeth causes issues with chewing that could possibly result in indigestion
- Poor appearance & bone loss: loss of youthful facial structure due to bone re-absorption
- Loss of lip support
- Poor speech: difficulty in speaking especially if front teeth are missing
